Celebrating the Fourth With Red, White, and Blue Parfaits

This week at summer camp, our children explored Independence Day in a way that felt joyful and hands-on. They talked together about the holiday, created festive art, and dove into practical life experiences that let them do the work themselves.

The highlight was making red, white, and blue frozen yogurt parfaits with fresh berries. Each child built their own snack, layering creamy yogurt and berries one spoonful at a time. Our teachers set out the ingredients and then stepped back, giving every child the room to choose, pour, and layer at their own pace.

That simple act of layering teaches so much. As children scoop and spoon, their little hands grow stronger and more coordinated. Deciding what comes first, next, and last builds their sense of sequencing. Choosing how to build their own snack gives them real ownership, something we value deeply in our Montessori classrooms.

Seeing a child finish a parfait they built entirely on their own brings us so much joy. Independence grows in these small, everyday moments, and it fills children with quiet pride. We nurture that natural curiosity and capability every day, and this festive, healthy treat was a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday together.

We loved watching the focus on their faces and the smiles when they took that first bite.
