Diving Deep: A Week of Water Play, Ocean Creatures, and Curiosity That Flows
Water is one of the most naturally compelling materials for young children, and this week at Wayland Montessori, we leaned into that fully.
Our Water and Ocean Life week brought the wonder of rivers, lakes, and the deep ocean right into our summer days. Children explored the properties of water through hands-on sensory activities, testing what sinks, what floats, and what happens when you mix colors into a clear bowl. There is no shortage of genuine scientific thinking that happens when children are given water and permission to experiment.
Ocean life was explored through beautifully illustrated materials, models, and guided conversations. Children learned about creatures that glow in the dark, animals that breathe through gills, and ecosystems that exist miles beneath the surface of the sea. The Montessori prepared environment gave children time and space to sit with those ideas, return to them, and form real understanding.
Water play throughout the week was joyful and purposeful. Children practiced pouring, measuring, and comparing in ways that connected sensory experience to early math and science concepts.
By the end of the week, several children had decided they wanted to be marine biologists. We think that is a wonderful outcome for a Thursday.
