The People Who Keep Us Safe: A Week with Our Community Helpers

This week at Wayland Montessori, our campers learned about the people who show up every day to keep our communities running, safe, and cared for.

Community Helpers week was rich with conversation, roleplay, and connection to the real world outside our classroom walls. Children explored the work of firefighters, nurses, teachers, construction workers, librarians, and more. Through books, materials, and imaginative play, they began to understand that communities function because people choose to serve them.

The highlight of the week was a visit from a local police officer. Children had the opportunity to ask real questions, hear about what the job actually involves, and see up close some of the tools and equipment officers use. The officer was warm, engaged, and wonderful with our campers. Children left that experience with a sense of genuine connection to someone in their community who works to keep them safe.

Roleplay throughout the week was vibrant. Children took turns being the doctor, the mail carrier, the firefighter. Watching them step into those roles with such seriousness and care was a reminder of how deeply young children want to understand the world and their place in it.

Next week is Communication and Postal Service week. Children will write letters, learn how mail travels, and we are planning a visit to the post office. A memorable week ahead.
