Our Children Built a Lemonade Stand From Scratch This Week

Last week, our children at Wayland Montessori worked toward one goal. They wanted to open their own lemonade stand for a parent visit on Friday.

Every part of the project came from their own hands. The children designed their own aprons before they began. They washed and cut fresh lemons and strawberries to make homemade strawberry lemonade and strawberry jam. They built the stand board by board and painted their own signs to welcome their families.

Along the way, the children slowed down to study a single lemon closely. They cut it open and looked at every part inside. They talked about the peel, the pulp, and the seeds, and what each part does for the fruit. Then they set some of those seeds aside to dry. Next spring, they hope to plant them and watch a new lemon tree grow.

This kind of project sits at the heart of Montessori learning. Our children measured, cut, tasted, and built instead of reading about lemons in a book. They practiced real skills, from careful knife work to teamwork, and they took pride in every step they finished themselves.

On Friday, their families got a taste of the lemonade and jam their children made and saw the stand they built with their own hands.
