Jump, Run, Stretch, and Breathe: Celebrating What Our Bodies Can Do

This week at Wayland Montessori, we celebrated the most remarkable tool children have: their own bodies.

Movement and Human Body week was an exuberant blend of learning and physical joy. Children explored how the body works, from the way our hearts pump faster when we run to the way our lungs fill and empty with each breath. Teachers guided activities that helped children feel these systems in action, connecting the science of the body to lived, physical experience.

Our visit to the playground was the heart of the week, structured as a field-day-style celebration of movement. Children ran relays, practiced balancing, stretched, jumped, and cheered for each other with real enthusiasm. The playground became a laboratory for understanding agility, coordination, and teamwork.

Back inside, children explored diagrams of the body, named bones and muscles, and practiced deep breathing as a way of understanding how the lungs work. Several children became very interested in heartbeats and spent time listening to each other's chests with the kind of focused wonder that is one of the most beautiful things about early childhood learning.

Physical movement is woven into authentic Montessori practice not as recreation but as a genuine part of how children learn and develop. This week gave us a joyful opportunity to make that connection explicit.

Next week is Around the World week, and we are celebrating the World Cup. Each day we will explore a different country through its food, culture, and traditions. A delicious and fascinating week ahead.
