Why We Make a Big Deal of the First Day

Our first day of school for returning students is Tuesday, September 8, and we plan to make it feel like an event. A welcome table and a lot of warmth greet every child at the door.

Some Montessori schools treat the first day like any other. We don't. Marking the moment matters, because it tells a child that this year, this classroom, and this community are worth celebrating.

Once the morning excitement settles, our teaching team gets right to work. We gather as a group to go over our classroom expectations. We walk through the three simple steps behind every Montessori lesson: choose a lesson, work with it carefully, then return it to its place. After a summer of relaxed days, our teachers spend extra time helping children settle into a full day indoors.

Our returning families already know this rhythm well. For them, the first day is not about learning something new. It's about stepping back into a routine their child helped build.
